Download HWT Slab Font

Designed by William Hamilton Page and Tim Martin, HWT Slab is a slab serif and wood type font family. This typeface has two styles and was published by P22 Type Foundry.

These two extra bold fonts are classic slab serif wood type styles with one detail of difference. Columbian is an extra bold Clarendon wood type that was manufactured by many of the wood type manufacturers in the late 19th century. “Clarendons” feature bracketed or rounded serif joins whereas “Antique” was a class of typefaces that features squared off slab serifs. Some type designs have only minor differences from others. The Columbian design is essentially identical to Wm. Page & Co.‘s “Antique no. 4”, with the difference being the bracketed serifs.

In researching material for the digitization of Columbian, we started with a 15 line font identified as “Columbian” shown in the Angelica Press wood type portfolio (printed in 1976). This font is in fact “Page Antique no. 4”. Comparing Antique #4 to Columbian specimens from Hamilton and other manufacturers confirms the only real difference is the serif treatments. Therefore, both fonts are presented as a pair. Each font features a full Western & Central European character set.

Qipao is a display monospace handwriting font. The typeface is a distinct hand drawn font using a felt marker. The Qipao name is derived from the traditional Chinese dress that Manchu women wore in China in the 17th century and became known as the qipao (旗袍), meaning “banner gown”. Qipao is great for display work, invitations, writing, architecture, posters, logos and headings.

Align Vertical Mono has an innovator construction which gives to the designer the ability to align the letters creating beautiful design “patterns” on the page. This font was designed by the tyner (typography Designer) Pedro Mascarenhas to fill a gap in type design. With Align Mono Family, the type is the design and not part of the design. The final result of the artwork depends on the choices designer makes for each glyph.

Download HWT Roman Extended Fatface Font

The design of the first “Fat Face” is credited to Robert Thorne just after 1800 in England. It is considered to be the first type style designed specifically for display or jobbing, rather than for book work. The first instance of Fat Face in wood type is found in the first wood type specimen book ever produced: Darius Wells, Letter Cutter 1828. This style was produced by all early wood type manufacturers.

The style is derived from the high contrast, thick and thin Modern style of Bodoni and Didot developed only decades previously. The extended variation makes the face even more of a display type and not at all suitable for text. This type of display type was used to compete with the new Lithographic process which allowed for the development of the poster as an artform unto itself.

This new digitization by Jim Lyles most closely follows the Wm Page cut. The crisp outlines hold up at the largest point sizes you can imagine. This font contains a full CE character set

Download HWT Star Ornaments Font

Star Ornaments are seen as a long standing companion to many wood type poster layouts. Various manufacturers managed to derive many variations of the five pointed star motif and offered them as a ubiquitous ornament option in almost all of their catalogs. Manufacturers such as Wm. H Page, Morgans & Wilcox, Tubbs Mfg. Co. and of course, Hamilton Wood Type each had their own slight variations. This digital font features almost 100 glyphs of mostly stars, but it also features a unique star border that can create boxes just like the modular offerings of the 19th century. The twist on this digital version is the inclusion of additional connection options that become a unique lettering ‘kit’ that can create typography or maze-like connections using a limited set of component parts.
